Post-Exploitation: Persistence refers to the techniques attackers use to maintain access to a compromised system even after initial entry or after reboots. This involves establishing hidden backdoors, creating new user accounts, or modifying system configurations to ensure continued unauthorized control. Attackers achieve this by embedding malicious code or processes that automatically run when the system starts or at scheduled intervals. Understanding persistence is crucial for defenders to detect and remove lingering threats, preventing attackers from re-establishing a foothold. For example, an attacker might install a rootkit that hides their presence and ensures their malware loads with the operating system. This differs from initial access, which focuses solely on gaining entry, whereas persistence aims to keep that access over time. This concept is frequently tested in cybersecurity certifications like CompTIA Security+ and CySA+.
