Private Access to Azure Services

PathTerms

Definition

Private Access to Azure Services enables you to connect to Azure services, such as Azure SQL Database or Azure Storage, using a private IP address from your virtual network rather than over the public internet. This is achieved by leveraging Azure Private Link, which creates a private endpoint within your virtual network that maps to the specific Azure service. This approach significantly enhances security by ensuring that network traffic remains within the Azure backbone network, reducing exposure to external threats. For instance, a company can access its Azure Blob Storage account exclusively through its virtual network, preventing any direct public internet access. Unlike VPNs or ExpressRoute which extend your on premises network into Azure, Private Link provides direct private connectivity to individual Azure PaaS services. This concept is foundational for secure cloud architecture and appears on certifications like CySA+ and CISSP.
