Problem management

PathTerms

Definition

Problem management is the process of identifying the root cause of recurring incidents and preventing them from happening again. It focuses on analyzing underlying issues rather than just fixing individual symptoms. By understanding the 'why' behind problems, organizations can implement permanent solutions and improve overall system stability. This involves investigating incidents, analyzing trends, and developing workarounds or permanent fixes to prevent future occurrences. Effective problem management reduces the number of disruptive incidents, saving time and resources. For instance, if multiple users report slow network performance, problem management would investigate if a faulty router is the root cause, rather than just restarting devices. This differs from incident management, which aims to restore service quickly. Problem management concepts are relevant to ITIL foundations, CompTIA Security+, and PMP certifications.
