Definition
Pseudonymization is a data protection technique that replaces direct identifiers in data with artificial identifiers, or pseudonyms. This process makes it difficult to identify an individual directly from the data, but crucially, it allows for re-identification if necessary through the use of additional information stored separately. In practice, it involves creating a mapping between original data and its pseudonymous form, often using a secure lookup table or algorithm. Pseudonymization is vital for balancing data utility with privacy requirements, enabling analysis and processing while minimizing exposure of personal information. For instance, a healthcare provider might pseudonymize patient records for research, replacing names with unique patient IDs. Unlike anonymization, which permanently removes identifying information, pseudonymization retains the possibility of linking back to the individual. This concept is frequently tested on certifications like CompTIA Security+ and CISSP, and is a key topic in Accumentum's cybersecurity training.
