Pub/Sub messaging

PathTerms

Definition

Pub/Sub messaging is an architectural pattern for asynchronous communication where senders, called publishers, categorize messages into topics without knowing who the recipients are. Receivers, known as subscribers, express interest in specific topics and receive messages published to those topics. This decoupling allows publishers and subscribers to operate independently, enhancing scalability and resilience. Publishers send messages to a central broker, which then distributes them to all interested subscribers. This pattern is crucial for building event-driven systems, enabling real-time data processing and seamless integration between disparate services. For instance, an e-commerce platform might use Pub/Sub to notify inventory services when an order is placed, without the order service needing direct knowledge of the inventory system. Unlike direct point-to-point messaging, Pub/Sub avoids tight coupling, preventing a failure in one subscriber from impacting others. This concept frequently appears in cloud computing domains and is relevant for certifications like AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate and CCSP.
