Red team

PathTerms

Definition

A Red team is a group of cybersecurity professionals who simulate adversarial attacks against an organization's defenses. Their objective is to identify vulnerabilities and weaknesses that real attackers could exploit. Red teams operate by emulating the tactics, techniques, and procedures of actual threat actors to test security controls comprehensively. This practice is crucial for organizations to proactively discover and remediate security gaps before they are exploited. For instance, a Red team might attempt to gain unauthorized access to sensitive data through social engineering and phishing campaigns. Unlike penetration testing which often focuses on specific systems, Red teaming takes a broader, more strategic approach to assess overall security posture. This concept is frequently covered in certifications like CompTIA Security+, CySA+, and CISSP.
