Definition

Restore refers to the process of returning a system, data, or application to a previous functional state. This is typically achieved by using backups or snapshots that were created at an earlier point in time. In practice, restore operations are initiated when data loss occurs due to hardware failure, accidental deletion, cyberattacks, or other disruptive events. Restoring systems ensures business continuity and minimizes downtime, which is critical for maintaining operational integrity and user trust. For instance, a company might restore a database from a nightly backup after a ransomware attack encrypts the live data. This differs from recovery, which is a broader term encompassing the entire process of getting a system back online, including the restore step. Restore concepts are frequently tested in CompTIA Security+ and AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate exams.
