Risk Analysis

PathTerms

Definition

Risk analysis is the process of identifying potential threats to an organization's information assets, assessing the likelihood of those threats occurring, and determining the potential impact if they do. It involves evaluating vulnerabilities within systems and controls to understand how an attacker might exploit them. This systematic approach helps prioritize security efforts by focusing resources on the most critical risks. For instance, a company might analyze the risk of a ransomware attack on its customer database, considering the likelihood of a phishing email succeeding and the financial and reputational damage of data loss. Unlike a simple vulnerability scan which just lists weaknesses, risk analysis quantifies the potential harm and probability. This concept is fundamental to cybersecurity certifications like Security+, CySA+, and CISSP.
