Role Management

PathTerms

Definition

Role management is the process of defining, assigning, and maintaining user roles within an organization's systems and applications. It involves creating specific roles that grant particular permissions and then associating users with those roles based on their job functions and responsibilities. This ensures that individuals only have access to the resources and data necessary for their work, adhering to the principle of least privilege. Effective role management is crucial for maintaining security, compliance, and operational efficiency by controlling access and simplifying user administration. For instance, a 'read-only' role might be assigned to an auditor, while a 'developer' role would have broader access to code repositories and testing environments. This differs from individual user permissions, which can become complex to manage at scale, by grouping permissions logically. Role management is a key concept tested in domains like Security+ and CISSP.
