Runtime Operations

PathTerms

Definition

Runtime operations refers to the activities and processes involved in managing and monitoring systems, applications, and infrastructure while they are actively running and serving users. This encompasses tasks like performance monitoring, security incident response, troubleshooting, patching, and configuration management to ensure continuous availability and optimal functioning. It is crucial for maintaining the stability, security, and efficiency of IT environments in real time. For instance, a cloud administrator performing a live security patch on a web server during off peak hours to prevent a known vulnerability from being exploited is an example of runtime operations. Unlike development operations (DevOps) which focuses on the entire software lifecycle including deployment, runtime operations specifically targets the live operational phase. This concept is frequently assessed in cybersecurity certifications such as CompTIA Security+ and CySA+.
