Savings Plan

PathTerms

Definition

A Savings Plan is a flexible pricing model offered by cloud providers like AWS that allows customers to commit to a consistent amount of usage for a specified term in exchange for a significant discount compared to on-demand pricing. This commitment can be based on compute usage (Compute Savings Plans) or a broader category including EC2 Instance, Fargate, and Lambda usage (EC2 Instance Savings Plans). By agreeing to a certain hourly spend commitment, organizations can reduce their cloud expenditure considerably. For instance, a company might commit to $10 per hour for EC2 usage over a one-year term to gain substantial savings. It's important to distinguish Savings Plans from Reserved Instances, as Savings Plans offer more flexibility in terms of instance family and region changes. Understanding Savings Plans is crucial for cloud financial management and is often tested on AWS certification exams like the AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate.
