Definition
Scaling refers to the ability of a system, network, or process to handle a growing amount of work or its potential to be enlarged to accommodate that growth. This is achieved by adding resources, either by increasing the capacity of existing components (vertical scaling) or by adding more components (horizontal scaling). Scaling is crucial for ensuring that technology solutions remain performant and available as user demand or data volume increases. For instance, a website might scale horizontally by adding more web servers to distribute incoming traffic during a promotional event. This differs from elasticity, which is the ability to automatically scale up and down based on demand. Concepts of scaling are frequently assessed in domains like cloud computing, network infrastructure, and system administration, appearing on exams such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate.
