Security by design

PathTerms

Definition

Security by design is a proactive approach to building systems and applications where security considerations are integrated from the very beginning of the development lifecycle. Instead of adding security as an afterthought, it is woven into the architecture, code, and processes to prevent vulnerabilities before they can be exploited. This methodology ensures that security is a fundamental requirement, not an optional feature, leading to more robust and resilient systems. It involves anticipating potential threats and designing defenses accordingly, making security an inherent part of the system's structure and operation. Implementing security by design significantly reduces the cost and effort associated with patching vulnerabilities later and enhances overall system trustworthiness. For instance, a web application designed with security by design would incorporate input validation and secure coding practices from the initial coding phase, rather than relying solely on a firewall. This contrasts with a reactive security model, which addresses threats only after they emerge. This concept is crucial for certifications like CompTIA Security+, CySA+, and CISSP, as well as in professional cybersecurity roles.
