Security Engineering: Automation

PathTerms

Definition

Security Engineering Automation refers to the practice of using technology to automate security tasks and processes. This involves developing and implementing scripts, tools, and systems that can perform security functions like vulnerability scanning, incident response, and policy enforcement without direct human intervention. Automation is crucial for improving efficiency, reducing human error, and enabling faster threat detection and mitigation in complex IT environments. For instance, automated security orchestration, automation, and response SOAR platforms can automatically trigger containment actions when a threat is detected. Unlike manual security processes which are time consuming and prone to oversight, automation ensures consistency and speed. This concept is fundamental to domains covered in certifications such as Security+, CySA+, and CISSP.
