Service Discovery

PathTerms

Definition

Service Discovery is a mechanism that allows systems and applications to automatically locate and communicate with each other within a network, eliminating the need for manual configuration of network addresses and ports. It typically involves a central registry where services register themselves upon startup and other services query this registry to find available endpoints. This is crucial for dynamic environments, especially microservices architectures, where services are constantly starting, stopping, and scaling. For instance, a web application might use service discovery to find the current network location of a user authentication service. It differs from DNS, which primarily maps hostnames to IP addresses, by providing more dynamic information about available service instances and their capabilities. Service Discovery concepts are relevant for cloud-native certifications like AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate and CompTIA Network+.
