Shadow IT

PathTerms

Definition

Shadow IT refers to technology solutions used within an organization without explicit approval or oversight from the IT department. This often occurs when employees or departments procure and implement their own software, hardware, or cloud services to meet immediate needs, bypassing official procurement and security protocols. While intended to boost productivity, shadow IT introduces significant risks because these unauthorized systems may lack proper security configurations, compliance adherence, and integration with existing infrastructure. For instance, a marketing team using an unvetted cloud storage service for sensitive customer data creates a substantial data breach vulnerability. This differs from sanctioned cloud adoption, which involves formal evaluation and integration processes. Understanding shadow IT is crucial for cybersecurity professionals and appears on exams like CompTIA Security+ and CySA+.
