Snort

PathTerms

Definition

Snort is an open-source intrusion detection and prevention system (IDPS) that monitors network traffic for malicious activity. It analyzes network packets in real-time, comparing them against a predefined set of rules to identify potential threats. When a rule is triggered, Snort can alert administrators, log the event, or even block the offending traffic. This capability is crucial for maintaining network security by detecting and responding to attacks before they cause significant damage. For instance, Snort can be configured to detect and block attempts to exploit known vulnerabilities in web servers. Unlike a simple firewall that blocks traffic based on ports and IP addresses, Snort inspects the actual content of network packets. It is a foundational tool covered in cybersecurity certifications like CompTIA Security+ and CySA+.
