Software composition analysis

Also called: SCA

Definition

Software composition analysis, or SCA, is a cybersecurity practice that identifies and manages open source software components within applications. It automates the process of detecting known vulnerabilities, license compliance issues, and security risks associated with third-party code. SCA tools scan application codebases and their dependencies to create an inventory of all software components, enabling teams to understand their software supply chain. This is crucial for mitigating security threats, ensuring legal compliance, and maintaining the integrity of software products. For instance, an SCA scan might reveal that a project uses an outdated version of a library with a critical security flaw, prompting immediate remediation. Unlike static application security testing (SAST) which analyzes custom code, SCA focuses specifically on third-party and open source elements. This concept is frequently tested on certifications like CompTIA Security+, CySA+, and CISSP.
