SSL

Also called: Secure Sockets Layer

Definition

SSL Secure Sockets Layer is a protocol that establishes an encrypted link between a server and a client, ensuring that data transferred between them remains private and integral. It works by using asymmetric and symmetric encryption to authenticate the server and then encrypt the communication session. This is crucial for protecting sensitive information like login credentials and financial details from interception. For instance, when you see a padlock icon in your web browser's address bar, SSL is active, securing your connection to the website. While often used interchangeably, SSL is technically an older protocol superseded by Transport Layer Security TLS, though the term SSL is still widely recognized. You will encounter SSL concepts on exams like CompTIA Security+ and CySA+.
