Definition
A threat actor is an individual or group that intentionally engages in malicious cyber activities. These actors possess varying motivations, resources, and technical skills, ranging from opportunistic hackers to sophisticated nation-state sponsored groups. In practice, threat actors are the entities behind cyberattacks, constantly seeking vulnerabilities to exploit for their own gain, whether financial, political, or ideological. Understanding threat actors is crucial for effective cybersecurity, as it allows organizations to anticipate potential attacks and implement appropriate defenses. For instance, a ransomware group demanding payment after encrypting a company's data is a clear example of a threat actor at work. Unlike a vulnerability, which is a weakness, a threat actor is the active agent seeking to exploit that weakness. This concept is fundamental to cybersecurity certifications like CompTIA Security+ and CySA+.
