virtual warehouses

PathTerms

Definition

A virtual warehouse is a logical data storage and processing unit within a cloud data platform, separate from physical storage. It allows for independent scaling of compute resources to meet the demands of specific workloads, ensuring optimal performance without affecting other operations. This separation enables efficient resource allocation and cost management, as you only pay for the compute power you actively use. For instance, a marketing team might use one virtual warehouse for running complex analytics, while a sales team uses another for daily reporting, each scaled appropriately. Unlike a physical data warehouse which has fixed compute and storage, a virtual warehouse offers dynamic elasticity. This concept is crucial for cloud data engineering and analytics roles, often appearing in AWS Certified Data Analytics Specialty or similar cloud data architecture exams.
