Virtualization and Cloud Computing

PathTerms

Definition

Virtualization is the creation of a virtual, rather than actual, version of something, including virtual computer hardware platforms, storage devices, and computer network resources. Cloud computing leverages virtualization to deliver computing services-including servers, storage, databases, networking, software, analytics, and intelligence-over the Internet to offer faster innovation, flexible resources, and economies of scale. These technologies work by abstracting physical hardware resources and pooling them for on-demand access and dynamic allocation. Understanding virtualization and cloud computing is crucial for modern IT professionals as it underpins efficient resource management, scalability, and cost optimization in virtually all technology operations. For instance, a company might use cloud services to host its website, allowing it to scale resources up or down based on traffic without managing physical servers. This differs from traditional on-premises infrastructure where hardware is physically owned and managed by the organization. Knowledge of these concepts is frequently tested on certifications like the CCSP, AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate, and Security+.
