Wireless Monitoring

PathTerms

Definition

Wireless monitoring is the practice of observing and analyzing wireless network traffic and device behavior to detect anomalies, security threats, and performance issues. It involves using specialized tools and techniques to capture, decode, and interpret radio frequency (RF) signals and network protocols. This proactive approach is crucial for maintaining the integrity, confidentiality, and availability of wireless communications. For instance, it can identify rogue access points attempting to intercept sensitive data or detect unauthorized devices attempting to connect to a network. Unlike passive network sniffing, wireless monitoring often involves active scanning and analysis of the RF spectrum itself to understand the physical layer environment. This concept is frequently tested on security certifications like CompTIA Security+ and CISSP, as well as in network architecture and operational domains.
