Workflow Automation

PathTerms

Definition

Workflow automation is the use of technology to execute a series of tasks or actions in a predefined sequence with minimal human intervention. It streamlines repetitive processes by establishing rules and triggers that initiate subsequent steps, ensuring consistency and efficiency. This approach significantly reduces manual effort, minimizes errors, and accelerates operational throughput. For instance, a customer onboarding process can be automated, where submitting a form automatically creates a user account, sends a welcome email, and assigns initial training modules. Unlike simple scripting, workflow automation often involves complex logic, decision points, and integration with multiple systems. This concept is frequently encountered in IT certifications like CompTIA Security+ and AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate, as well as project management exams such as CAPM.
