Workload identities

PathTerms

Definition

Workload identities are non-human identities assigned to applications, services, or automated processes that need to access cloud resources. These identities act as credentials, allowing workloads to authenticate and authorize their access to specific cloud services and data without requiring hardcoded secrets. This approach significantly enhances security by enabling granular control over resource permissions and simplifying credential rotation. For instance, a web application running on a virtual machine could be assigned a workload identity to securely access a managed database. Unlike human user accounts, workload identities are designed for machine-to-machine communication, offering a more robust and auditable access model. Understanding workload identities is crucial for cloud security and infrastructure domains, appearing in certifications like AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate and CompTIA Security+.
