Definition
Workload identity refers to the security principles and practices used to authenticate and authorize the various software components or applications that make up a system, often called workloads. It ensures that each workload can securely access the resources it needs without compromising the overall security posture. This is crucial for maintaining the principle of least privilege and preventing unauthorized access between different parts of an application or between applications. For instance, a microservice needing to read data from a database would be assigned a specific workload identity that grants it only the necessary read permissions. A common point of confusion is mistaking workload identity for human user identity, which focuses on individual people rather than software entities. Understanding workload identity is vital for passing exams like CompTIA Security+, CySA+, and CISSP, as well as for securing cloud-native applications.
