Definition
XDR, or Extended Detection and Response, is a unified security approach that integrates and correlates data from multiple security layers, including endpoints, networks, cloud workloads, and email. It automates the detection of threats by analyzing this aggregated data, providing a holistic view of potential security incidents. XDR significantly enhances an organization's ability to respond to cyber threats faster and more effectively by streamlining investigation and remediation processes. For example, it can link a phishing email to malware execution on an endpoint and subsequent lateral movement on the network, all within a single console. This contrasts with traditional, siloed security tools that might only detect parts of the attack chain. XDR concepts are relevant for certifications like CompTIA Security+, CySA+, and CISSP.
