Exam Readiness: Ready, Almost or Not Yet? Check Before You Book

You're ready to book when your full-length practice exams land in the same range week after week, you've worked through every domain on the official outline, and you can sit through a full timed practice test without running out of time. A single good practice score can be luck, so look for a steady run of them.

Our free Exam Readiness Score turns that check into 20 questions and puts you in one of three bands: Ready, Almost or Not yet. Here's what each band means, what to do next, and the exam policies that decide how much room you have to change your plan.

What do Ready, Almost and Not yet mean?

The check has two parts. Three questions ask about your study habits: how long you've been studying, your recent average on full practice exams, and whether you have a fixed schedule with enough full practice exams behind you. The other seventeen are knowledge questions. Accumentum wrote them and mapped them to each exam's published topics. They aren't official exam questions.

Each habit question is worth up to 3 points and each knowledge question 1 point, for a total out of 26.

Score: Band

  • 21 to 26: Ready
  • 13 to 20: Almost
  • 0 to 12: Not yet

Because habits carry real weight, two people with the same knowledge can land in different bands. That's deliberate. If you know the material but have never sat a full timed practice exam, you haven't tested your pacing over 90 minutes, or four hours for PMP.

Which exams can you check?

There's a version for each of these exams.

If you're planning a Security+ date after mid-November, read Security+ SY0-701 vs SY0-801 first, since CompTIA expects the new version to launch on or around November 17, 2026.

What should you do if you scored Ready?

Book the exam for a date you can actually keep. Spend the time before it on your weakest domains only, and take two or three more full practice exams with a review the same day. The week before, protect your sleep. A late night of cramming before a long exam usually costs more than it adds.

What should you do if you scored Almost?

Give yourself two focused weeks before you book. The plan the tool gives you looks like this.

  • Timed practice sets at least five days a week
  • One full practice exam each weekend, with every miss reviewed
  • Daily drills on the focus domains your results flagged
  • No late nights before a practice exam

Then take the Readiness Score again. If you've moved up to Ready, book it. If you're stuck, look at which domains keep showing up in your misses, because that's where the next week goes.

What should you do if you scored Not yet?

Hold off on booking, or move your date if you already have one. A Not yet result usually means the base isn't there yet, and piling on practice questions won't build it. A structured course will. Add practice exams once the fundamentals start to stick.

It's a lot cheaper to learn this now than at the test center.

How late can you move your exam date?

Check this before you book. Moving a date early is free, and waiting too long can cost you the whole exam fee.

Exam and timing: What happens

  • CompTIA, at a test center: Reschedule or cancel at least 24 hours before the appointment, or the fee is forfeited
  • CompTIA, online: Reschedule before the appointment's start time
  • PMI, more than 30 days out: No fee
  • PMI, within 30 days: US$70 plus taxes
  • PMI, within 48 hours: No changes allowed, and a no-show forfeits the entire exam fee

CompTIA vouchers expire too, typically 12 months from purchase, so look at the date on yours before you push an exam back.

PMI exams have a second clock. Once your application is approved, you have one year to take the exam. A Not yet result in month eleven doesn't leave much room.

What happens if you don't pass?

Both programs let you try again, with limits.

  • CompTIA: No waiting period between your first and second attempt. Before a third or later attempt, you wait at least 14 calendar days. You pay the full exam price each time.
  • PMI: Up to three attempts within your one-year eligibility period, with fees due for the second and third. After three unsuccessful attempts, you wait one year from your last exam before you can reapply for that certification.

Can you turn a practice score into a passing score?

Not reliably. Security+ is scored from 100 to 900 with 750 to pass, and that scale isn't a percentage. PMI doesn't publish a passing percentage either. Its handbook says the passing score comes from psychometric analysis, and your score report shows pass or fail plus how you did in each domain.

So treat practice percentages as a trend. The Readiness Score's guidance is a consistent 75 percent or higher on full practice exams before you sit, and a rising trend tells you more than any one result.

Where do Accumentum courses and PathPass fit?

A Not yet score usually means you need structure more than more practice questions. You can browse every course in our training catalog, and each one is on-demand and self-paced.

For Almost or Ready, PathPass® is our practice bank, at $19 a month for one exam or $39 for all banks. If cost is what's holding up a course, PathPay® spreads it into monthly payments. It's a payment plan, not a loan.
