Access Management, often referred to as Identity and Access Management (IAM), is a crucial cybersecurity framework that controls who or what can view, use, or change resources in an environment. It involves establishing and managing user identities and their associated permissions, ensuring that individuals and systems have only the necessary access to perform their functions. On the job, IAM is fundamental for maintaining security, compliance, and operational efficiency by preventing unauthorized access and data breaches. For instance, an IAM system might grant a marketing employee read-only access to customer data but prevent them from modifying it, while a sales representative would have write access. This differs from authentication, which simply verifies a user's identity, whereas IAM also dictates what that verified user is allowed to do. IAM concepts are essential for certifications like CompTIA Security+, CySA+, and CISSP.
