Adaptive Planning

PathTerms

Definition

Adaptive planning is a project management approach that embraces change and uncertainty by building flexibility into the project roadmap. Instead of a rigid, fixed plan, adaptive planning uses iterative cycles and frequent reassessments to adjust scope, timelines, and resources as new information emerges. This methodology allows teams to respond effectively to evolving requirements, market shifts, or unforeseen challenges, ensuring the project remains aligned with business objectives. For instance, a software development team might use adaptive planning to incorporate user feedback received during a sprint into the next development cycle. This contrasts with traditional waterfall methods where changes are often difficult and costly to implement once a phase is complete. Adaptive planning is a key concept in Agile project management, frequently tested in certifications like PMI-ACP.
