Anonymization

PathTerms

Definition

Anonymization is the process of removing or altering personally identifiable information (PII) from data so that the individuals to whom the data relates cannot be identified. This is achieved by techniques such as generalization, suppression, or perturbation, making the data non-personal. Anonymization is crucial for protecting privacy and complying with data protection regulations like GDPR and HIPAA, enabling data analysis and sharing without compromising individual identities. For instance, a healthcare provider might anonymize patient records before sharing them with researchers to study disease trends. Unlike pseudonymization, which replaces identifiers with artificial ones but still allows re-identification with additional information, anonymization aims for irreversible de-identification. This concept is frequently assessed on cybersecurity certifications such as CompTIA Security+ and CySA+.
