Attention mechanism

PathTerms

Definition

An attention mechanism is a technique in artificial intelligence that allows a model to focus on specific parts of its input when processing information. It mimics human cognitive attention by assigning different weights or importance scores to different input elements. This selective focus enables models to better understand context and relationships within data, leading to more accurate and relevant outputs. For example, in natural language processing, an attention mechanism helps a translation model pinpoint the most relevant words in a source sentence to generate the correct words in a target sentence. Unlike simple sequential processing, attention allows for non-linear relationships and can be more computationally intensive. This concept is relevant for AI and machine learning certifications and professional development in AI-focused roles.
