Backlog refinement

Also called: Backlog grooming

Definition

Backlog refinement, also known as backlog grooming, is an ongoing agile process where a product owner and development team collaborate to review, estimate, and prioritize items in the product backlog. This activity ensures that backlog items are well understood, actionable, and ready for upcoming sprints. It involves breaking down large features into smaller, more manageable user stories, clarifying acceptance criteria, and assigning estimates. The team discusses each item, asking questions and providing input to achieve a shared understanding and accurate sizing. This proactive approach prevents surprises during sprint planning and execution, leading to more predictable delivery and higher quality outcomes. For instance, a team might refine a user story for a new login feature by discussing password complexity rules and error message handling. Unlike sprint planning, which focuses on selecting items for the immediate sprint, refinement looks further ahead, preparing items for future sprints. This concept is crucial for agile practitioners and appears on exams like the PMI-ACP and CAPM.
