Definition

Behavior-driven development BDD is an agile software development process that encourages collaboration between developers, quality assurance testers, and non-technical participants. It focuses on defining software behavior through examples written in a natural language format that can be understood by everyone on the team. These examples are then automated as tests to verify the software meets the specified requirements. BDD helps ensure that the software being built aligns with business objectives and user needs, leading to higher quality and more relevant products. For instance, a BDD scenario might describe how a user logs into an application, specifying expected outcomes for valid and invalid credentials. This approach is distinct from test-driven development TDD by emphasizing shared understanding and business value over purely technical implementation details. Behavior-driven development concepts appear on the PMI-ACP, CAPM, and PMP exams.
