Bias in AI

Also called: Algorithmic bias

Definition

Bias in AI, also known as algorithmic bias, refers to systematic and repeatable errors in an artificial intelligence system that create unfair outcomes. These biases often stem from flawed assumptions made during the AI development process or from biased data used to train the model. In practice, AI bias can manifest as discriminatory outputs, leading to inequitable treatment of certain demographic groups. This is critical for professionals to understand as biased AI can perpetuate societal inequalities and erode trust in technology. For instance, facial recognition systems have historically shown lower accuracy rates for individuals with darker skin tones due to underrepresentation in training datasets. Unlike human bias, which can be subjective and inconsistent, AI bias is embedded within the algorithms and data, making it potentially more pervasive. Understanding AI bias is increasingly important for roles covered by certifications like the AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate and CompTIA Security+.
