Definition

The Critical Path Method (CPM) is a project management technique used to identify the longest sequence of tasks that must be completed on time for a project to finish by its deadline. It involves breaking down a project into individual activities, estimating the duration of each, and then mapping their dependencies to determine the critical path. This path represents the minimum time required to complete the project, as any delay in a critical path task directly impacts the overall project schedule. Understanding the critical path allows project managers to focus resources and attention on the most crucial activities. For instance, in software development, the critical path might include coding, testing, and deployment phases that cannot be performed in parallel. CPM differs from the Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT) by using single time estimates for tasks rather than a range. This concept is frequently tested on PMP, CAPM, and PMI-ACP examinations.
