Definition

A foundation model is a large artificial intelligence model trained on a vast and diverse dataset, enabling it to perform a wide range of downstream tasks with minimal fine tuning. These models learn general patterns and representations from the data, allowing them to understand and generate human language, images, code, and more. In practice, they are adapted for specific applications by providing them with a smaller, task-specific dataset or through prompt engineering. Foundation models are crucial for accelerating AI development and deployment, offering powerful capabilities for tasks like content creation, data analysis, and complex problem solving. For instance, a single foundation model can be used to power both a chatbot and an image generation tool. Unlike specialized AI models trained for a single purpose, foundation models are designed for broad applicability. They are increasingly appearing in AI certification domains and responsible AI programs.
