Definition
A gray hat hacker is a cybersecurity professional who operates in a legal and ethical gray area. They may search for vulnerabilities in systems without explicit permission, but their intent is often to report these flaws to the organization rather than exploit them for personal gain. This approach allows them to discover security weaknesses that might otherwise go unnoticed, thereby improving overall security posture. For instance, a gray hat might find a flaw in a company's public facing website and then contact the company to offer their services to fix it. Unlike black hat hackers who act maliciously, or white hat hackers who always have authorization, gray hats blur the lines of permission. This concept is frequently tested on cybersecurity certifications like CompTIA Security+ and CySA+.
