Human in the loop

Also called: HITL

Definition

Human in the loop, or HITL, is a design principle for artificial intelligence systems that integrates human oversight and intervention into the AI's decision-making or operational processes. This approach ensures that AI models are trained, validated, and monitored by human experts, allowing for correction of errors and refinement of performance. HITL is crucial for building trust and accountability in AI applications, especially in critical domains where AI errors can have significant consequences. For instance, a medical diagnostic AI might flag potential issues, but a radiologist must confirm the diagnosis before treatment. This differs from fully automated AI, which operates without any human input. HITL concepts are frequently assessed in AI and cybersecurity certifications like CompTIA's AIAD and CySA+.
