Incident containment strategies are proactive and reactive measures taken to limit the scope and impact of a security incident. These strategies aim to prevent further damage, protect critical assets, and maintain operational continuity by isolating affected systems or networks. In practice, this involves quickly identifying the breach, segmenting compromised areas, and implementing temporary fixes or workarounds. Applying these strategies is crucial for minimizing financial losses, reputational damage, and legal liabilities associated with security breaches. For instance, quarantining an infected workstation to prevent malware spread across a corporate network is a common containment tactic. Unlike incident eradication which focuses on removing the threat, containment prioritizes limiting its spread. This concept is frequently assessed in cybersecurity certifications such as CompTIA Security+ and CySA+.
