Definition
Incident Response and Management is a structured approach to handling security breaches or cyberattacks. It involves preparing for, detecting, analyzing, containing, eradicating, and recovering from security incidents to minimize damage and restore normal operations. This process ensures that organizations have a clear plan to follow when a security event occurs, reducing chaos and improving the effectiveness of the response. It matters on the job because it helps protect sensitive data, maintain business continuity, and preserve customer trust. For example, a company detecting a ransomware attack would activate its incident response plan to isolate infected systems, prevent further spread, and begin recovery from backups. Unlike general disaster recovery which focuses on broad business disruption, incident response specifically targets security events. This critical concept is frequently tested on certifications like CompTIA Security+, CySA+, and CISSP.
