Job rotation

PathTerms

Definition

Job rotation is a security practice where individuals periodically switch roles or responsibilities within an organization. This systematic movement of personnel helps prevent the accumulation of excessive privileges and reduces the risk of insider threats or fraud by limiting the time any single person has sole access to critical systems or data. By ensuring that no single individual holds a position of power for an extended duration, organizations can enhance internal controls and operational resilience. For instance, a finance team member responsible for approving payments might rotate with a team member who handles invoice processing, preventing one person from controlling the entire payment chain. This differs from role segregation, which focuses on separating duties to prevent a single person from completing a critical task, whereas job rotation involves the actual movement of people between roles. Job rotation concepts are frequently tested on cybersecurity certifications like CompTIA Security+ and CISSP.
