TACACS+ is a network protocol that provides centralized authentication, authorization, and accounting (AAA) for network access. It operates by forwarding user authentication requests from a network access device to a central TACACS+ server. This server then verifies the user's credentials and determines what network resources they are permitted to access and logs their activity. For instance, a network administrator might use TACACS+ to control which routers and switches a junior technician can manage. Unlike RADIUS, TACACS+ encrypts the entire authentication packet, not just the password, offering enhanced security. This protocol is a key topic in cybersecurity certifications like CompTIA Security+ and CySA+.
