Just-in-time access

Also called: JIT access

Definition

Just-in-time access, or JIT access, is a security control that grants users elevated privileges for a limited duration, rather than permanent access. This approach significantly reduces the attack surface by ensuring that sensitive systems and data are only exposed when absolutely necessary. In practice, a user requests elevated permissions for a specific task, and upon approval, the access is granted for a predetermined, short period before automatically reverting to standard permissions. This method is crucial for minimizing the window of opportunity for malicious actors and preventing accidental misuse of powerful credentials. For instance, an IT administrator might use JIT access to perform a system update, receiving full administrative rights for only the hour needed to complete the task. It differs from role-based access control (RBAC) by providing temporary, task-specific elevation rather than standing permissions based on job function. JIT access is a key concept covered in cybersecurity certifications like CompTIA Security+ and CySA+.
