Media Types

PathTerms

Definition

Media types refer to the physical or logical characteristics of the transmission medium used for data communication. This encompasses everything from copper wires and fiber optic cables to wireless radio frequencies and even satellite links. In practice, the chosen media type dictates the speed, distance, and susceptibility to interference for data signals. Understanding media types is crucial for network engineers and architects to select the most appropriate and cost-effective solution for specific connectivity needs. For instance, Ethernet cables are a common media type for wired local area networks, offering reliable performance over moderate distances. Unlike network protocols which define rules for communication, media types define the physical pathways for that communication. This concept is fundamental in networking domains covered by CompTIA Network+ and Cisco CCNA certifications.
