Predictive lifecycle

PathTerms

Definition

A predictive lifecycle, also known as a waterfall lifecycle, is a project management approach where all project phases are completed sequentially. Each phase, such as requirements gathering, design, implementation, testing, deployment, and maintenance, must be fully completed before the next one begins. This structured method works by defining all project requirements upfront and following a linear progression through distinct stages. It matters on the job because it provides a clear roadmap, making it easier to manage scope, schedule, and budget, especially for projects with well-defined requirements. For instance, constructing a building follows a predictive lifecycle, with foundation work preceding framing, and framing preceding roofing. This contrasts with adaptive lifecycles, which allow for iterative changes and feedback throughout the project. Predictive lifecycle concepts are fundamental to PMP, CAPM, and PMI-ACP certifications and are covered in Accumentum Expert-led training.
