Privacy by design

PathTerms

Definition

Privacy by design is a proactive approach to embedding privacy protections into the entire lifecycle of a system, product, or service from its inception. It means anticipating and preventing privacy risks before they arise, rather than reacting to them after they occur. This principle is implemented by integrating privacy considerations into every stage of development and operation, ensuring that privacy is a default setting. It matters because it builds user trust, reduces the likelihood of costly data breaches, and ensures compliance with regulations. For example, a company designing a new mobile app would build in data minimization and user consent mechanisms from the initial design phase. This differs from privacy by default, which focuses on ensuring that the most privacy-friendly settings are applied automatically. Privacy by design is a core concept tested on certifications like Security+, CySA+, and CISSP.
