Definition

A Security Information and Event Management SIEM system is a software solution that aggregates and analyzes security data from various sources across an organization's IT infrastructure. It collects logs and event data from endpoints, servers, network devices, and applications, then normalizes and correlates this information to detect potential security threats and anomalies. SIEMs are crucial for centralized security monitoring, enabling faster incident response and compliance reporting by providing a unified view of security events. For instance, a SIEM can alert administrators to a brute force login attempt by correlating multiple failed login events from a single IP address. Unlike a simple log aggregator, a SIEM performs advanced analysis and threat detection, not just data storage. Understanding SIEM is fundamental for roles covered by certifications like CompTIA Security+, CySA+, and CISSP.
