Program Life Cycle

PathTerms

Definition

The Program Life Cycle is a framework that outlines the distinct phases a program goes through from its inception to its eventual closure. It provides a structured approach to managing complex initiatives that deliver strategic benefits, encompassing initiation, planning, execution, monitoring and control, and closure. This phased approach ensures that programs are systematically developed, implemented, and evaluated, aligning with organizational objectives and maximizing value. By following these stages, organizations can better manage resources, mitigate risks, and ensure successful outcomes for their strategic investments. For instance, a new cloud migration program would move through these phases, from defining its scope and objectives to its final decommissioning. It is distinct from a project life cycle in its focus on strategic benefits rather than discrete deliverables. This concept is frequently tested on the PMP and CAPM examinations.
