Definition
A RACI matrix is a project management tool that clarifies roles and responsibilities for tasks or deliverables within a project. It uses four key roles: Responsible, Accountable, Consulted, and Informed, to define who does the work, who owns it, who provides input, and who receives updates. This matrix ensures clear communication and prevents confusion about who is expected to perform specific actions and who needs to be kept aware of progress. For instance, in a software development project, a developer might be Responsible for coding, the project manager Accountable for the feature's delivery, a business analyst Consulted on requirements, and stakeholders Informed of completion. It is distinct from a simple task assignment list because it explicitly defines the level of involvement for each role. You will find RACI matrices discussed in preparation for PMP, CAPM, and PMI-ACP examinations.
